What is water?

Water is a chemical substance, composed of hydrogen & oxygen. It is essential for life. It is found generally in a liquid state. As a liquid it is a solvent. This means that it can dissolve other substances & incorporate them to create a solution. This is great for many reasons. It means we can make tea & coffee. Our bodies also benefit from this transaction of substances into water, think of sweat. Unfortunately it also means water can carry unwanted substances.

The water cycle
This is the natural cycle of water, also known as the hydrologic cycle. Various precipitation, rain, brings water to us and evaporation, run-off & transportation takes it away. Transportation is not a natural occurance. We are bottling & shipping water from all over the world. This is interrupting the natural water cycle. In some countries this is having terrible consequences. (see the doco 'A world without water')
